Baker City, Oregon, is an historic community in the central eastern part of the state. It lies along the Oregon Trail, now Highway 30. Between 1841 and 1869 more than 250,000 Americans took the Oregon Trail to the West, starting their journey in Independence, Missouri. Baker City was an important stop along the trail for many, and many made it their home. Baker City was named in honor of Edward Baker, one of Oregon's first senators and a colonel in the Union Army. Gold was discovered in 1861 and for awhile the area was the largest gold producer in the northwest. In 1866, Baker City was made the county seat by an act of the State Legislature, but Auburn, which was the original county seat, refused to relinquish the records. Following the official vote of the people in 1868, the records were confiscated in an early morning surprise visit of the new Baker county officials.

Chartered as a city in 1870, Baker City during gold rush days, it was the largest city in the state during gold rush days. In 1911, the town dropped "City" from its name, but restored it in the late 1980s in recognition of its history.
