The Elkhorn Valley Wind Power Project
August 30th, 2007 Posted in La Grande Real EstateJust recently I had the opportunity to tour the Elkhorn Valley to learn about the new wind farms being developed, so I thought I would share with you what I learned!
As you may or may not have noticed, there is a new source of power being developed in Eastern Oregon. Titled the Elkhorn Valley Wind Power Project, 61 modern 1.65 megawatt wind turbines are being constructed near the city of Union in Pyles Canyon. The projected outcome is 100 megawatts of affordable, pollution-free electricity; enough to meet the annual energy needs of over 25,000 Northwest homes.
How does this affect you as a citizen of Union County? Well altogether, the Project will occupy less than 150 acres. The turbines themselves will only take up 5 acres, with the rest being used for roads. The estimated capital cost exceeds $150 million. Such a major investment has a large ripple effect on the rural communities the projects are built in and the Project will generate substantial economic development benefits in Union County. During the construction phase, 200 workers will be employed, generating millions of dollars of local purchases. In the end, more than 15 permanent, family-wage jobs will be created.Fortunately, wind farming is highly compatible with ranching and farming activities and provides a new source of income to landowners. Properly managed wind farms have little impact on wildlife and can actually help to protect open spaces.
Well I hope this provided you with a little more information about wind farms and the effect this Project will have on our community. If you would like to learn more, you can visit their website at www.horizonwind.com. Also, I have provided some pictures of the wind farms in the virtual tour below.
