Hermiston Real Estate | Hermiston Oregon Homes For Sale

The city of Hermiston was originally known for the six mile house which was a sturdy old West Hotel. The main purpose of the hotel was to provide housing for overnight stay for the travelers and those who were the team freighters. The facility also was used as a feed barn for the mules and horses. With the development of the railroads, the use of the team freighters came to an end.

Hermiston was incorporated in 1907. During the 1920’s, agriculture was the main source of employment. The Bureau of Reclamation helped create the Cold Springs Reservoir which was constructed east of Hermiston for water storage from the Umatilla River. With the development of irrigation, farming expanded into the desert areas in Eastern Oregon. Alfalfa was the dominate crop at the time, while today the Hermiston farms are much more diversified with their crops. Hermiston is also home to the Umatilla county fair.

In 1940, the area just west of Hermiston was chosen as a site for the Umatilla Army Depot. In 1947, Congress authorized funding for the development of the McNary Dam. President Eisenhower dedicated the dam in 1952. The rail yard was constructed south of Hermiston which was part of the development of the McNary dam for transporting goods throughout the West.

In the 1970’s, the Hermiston area saw a growth in circle sprinklers and other new irrigation techniques. This led to the construction of large food processing centers such as J.R. Simplot and Lamb-Weston.

Hermiston continues to grow and is a great place to raise a family. We know the Hermiston real estate market and the surrounding area well.
