Haines is located on Highway 30, about 8 miles from the I-84 freeway, and about 6 miles from the Baker City. The city of Haines was created 1885. The name Haines was chosen from Israel David Haines that owned 1,200 acres of farmland in the immediate vicinity of what is now Haines, Oregon. Haines was an early community leader for the Baker County area. The history of Haines is rich in the cattle industry, mining and the growth of the Railroad. The community began its beginning in 1884, after completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. Israel David Haines platted out a portion of his property for the proposed town site area and the Oregon Navigation & Railroad Company constructed a small loading platform and railroad depot building. Today the town of Haines is well known for the Haines Steak House and the Museum. People travel from all parts of Northeast Oregon to visit these attractions. The town has a population of about 426 people, 183 households, and 127 families residing in the city. Haines is also the gateway to Anthony Ski area and to the Elk Horn Mountains. |
