La Grande is home to the Union County seat and is located along the I-84 Freeway, in the southwest region of the beautiful Grande Ronde Valley. At one time, the county seat was located in Union during the early days of the county. However, La Grande began to grow with the development of the Railroad which brought many jobs to the area, resuting in the expansion of the city. During the 1920’s, the downtown area was growing strong featuring nice sidewalks and street lights.

The Oregon Trail is located on the Southern section of town. La Grande was a resting place for the early settlers before they made the journey over the Blue Mountains. Today, you can still find sections of the trail in the Blue Mountains. Also located in these mountains is the Emigrant Springs Park. La Grande is home to the Eastern Oregon University which is a significant economic base for the county. The University offers many events for the public to participate in. During the late summer and fall, community members come out to support the Mountaineer football team. When winter starts, fans enjoying watching the University Men and Women basketball games. This is great entertainment and it is a great social event for the community.

La Grande also recently developed a new business and development park. The park features over 65 acres and is fully developed with paved roads, sidewalks, and all of the basic services. La Grande has numerous parks with Riverside and Pioneer Park as the main two. Riverside Park has a large pavilion and a newly constructed playground for children. The Pioneer Park is well known for its baseball fields. There is also skate board area and tennis court area. The city of La Grande also has the Memorial Swimming Pool.
