The city of Pendleton is located along the I-84 freeway, just West of the Blue Mountain Range. The city of Pendleton was named in 1868 after politician George H Pendleton. He was a democratic candidate for vice-president in the 1864 presidential campaign race on the George McClellan ticket. The town was incorporated in 1880 and is also the county seat for Umatilla County.

The city center began to come to life in 1851 when Dr. William C McKay established a trading post near Mckay creek and the Umatilla River. The post office was established in 1865. By 1900, the town had grown to 4,406 in population. Like many towns in Eastern Oregon, Pendleton had its own version of china town. The Pendleton Woolen Mills was founded in 1893 and is known world wide for its fine Indian trading blankets and men’s plaid shirts.

The Umatilla River runs through the middle of the town, along which the city recently created a paved walking/biking path. Pendleton is also known for its great parks and baseball fields. The city has a long history of having a strong Little League Baseball program. Pendleton School Board recently built a new high school situated in the northwest part of town.

Pendleton is famous for the Pendleton Round-Up event, which was first held in 1910 and is part of the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association. In 1999, the Rodeo added a two nights of profession bull riding competition. If golfing is your fashion, you have two great opportunities for golfing: the Pendleton Country Club or the Wild Horse Championship Golf course.
